How the models differ
A traditional PC runs applications and stores some data locally, even when it also uses cloud services. DaaS delivers the desktop from cloud infrastructure, with the endpoint acting as an access device. This changes where applications run, where data lives, how users are provisioned, and how failures affect work.
Security considerations
DaaS can centralize data, applications, patching, monitoring, and access controls. A lost endpoint may contain less business data. However, the access device, identity, session, cloud platform, and administrative systems still require strong protection. Traditional PCs can also be secure when well managed.
Application compatibility and performance
Some applications work well in centralized desktops, while others depend on local graphics, hardware, peripherals, licensing, latency, or vendor support. Test line-of-business software, printing, scanning, video, voice, USB devices, multiple monitors, and large files during a pilot.
Internet dependency
DaaS requires reliable connectivity. Consider office internet, home internet, mobile access, latency, bandwidth, and outage procedures. A traditional PC may continue some local work during an internet outage, although cloud applications and communications may still be unavailable.
Onboarding and device replacement
DaaS can accelerate onboarding because the user environment is centrally provisioned. If a device fails, the user may connect from another approved device. Traditional PCs often require imaging, application installation, data transfer, and configuration for each replacement.
Cost comparison
Compare endpoint hardware, replacement cycles, cloud infrastructure, licensing, internet, support, security, server infrastructure, backup, downtime, application delivery, and internal labor. DaaS is not automatically cheaper, but it may create operational value through consistency and flexibility.
Hybrid approaches
A business can use DaaS for remote employees, contractors, acquisitions, high-risk users, specialized applications, or temporary projects while retaining traditional PCs for roles that need local performance or peripherals.

Select representative users and applications. Define success criteria for performance, printing, conferencing, support, security, and cost. A pilot reveals practical issues before a broader migration.
